Laundry basket, dress, sunshine
Dimensions Variable
Lai placed a laundry basket by the window, draping a polka-dot dress over one side and sticking a round sticker on the glass.
As light passed through, the shadow cast by the sticker fell into the laundry basket. This created an interesting contrast: the polka dots on the dress, which aligned with the basket's round holes, were both part of the fabric’s design and appeared like shadows formed by the holes. Light that should have passed through seemed obstructed, projecting the images onto the dress—transforming the actual pattern into an illusionary shadow. Meanwhile, the shadow of the sticker landed inside the basket, becoming the only "physical object" within it. Yet, it remained ephemeral, destined to move out and eventually disappear over time.
It pertains to an everyday, natural gesture, by casually dropping a piece of garment on the basket, alluding once again to the idea of making a Life-Size Drawing—combining two identical things, render ing new imaginations that are made possible only by such doubling, identifying process. It is made originally for sunshine; highlighted is also the fact that none of the elements are made by the artist. The dress, the basket and the sunlight together bring about a relaxed ambience, suggesting the lived status of the place. For about three decades, Lai has been interested in ways in which senses, perceptions and experiences could be expanded; Sunbath is a concise example that aims at examining the interaction between materials, the architectural environment and sunlight.
